Our Story

We've loved every minute of our journey thus far!!

An Idea is Born

In 2011, Young Nurses Take Action was brought to life by two young nurses and a culmination of events. These young nurses  were active in their local union. Over the years they had been attending numerous events and conventions but were frustrated with the lack of involvement of other young nurses. Instead of sitting around and complaining about it, they decided to do something about it!! 

At the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions Convention 2011, there was a speaker from the NGO Buy A Net. The speaker gave a presentation of the the difference BAN was making in Uganda and on the fight against malaria. Then and there the light bulb went off!! What do young nurses love? They love their careers, they love to travel, they love to make a difference!! YNTA brought all of those together.

Since 2011, YNTA has organized three medical volunteer trips. On each of those trips the groups were together for a year; planning, learning, and fundraising! On every trip and throughout the years, friendships and support systems were created and maintained. Young nurses began supporting young nurses!!

With the dedication and input of the past three medical volunteer groups, YNTA has continued to grow. Without this input, direction, and encouragement, from these young  Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses, we would not be where we are today...a registered non-profit organization!! Mentorship and leadership goes both ways!

Our Vision Now

Young Nurses Take Action has evolved from a union youth initiative to a non-profit organization that is focused on leadership, mentorship, and global citizenship of young Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses.

LEADERSHIP
We believe that nurses are not only caring by nature, many of them are born leaders. Many of the qualities that make a great nurse are the same qualities that make great leaders; patience, empathy, ability to direct a crowd, excellent communication skills, and a deep level of caring for the people whose lives they are attempting to change. With that in mind, we want to create opportunities for young nurses to build on their leadership skills, within their profession, their communities and the broader global community. 

MENTORSHIP
We want young nurses to realize the importance of mentorship and start the mentoring process early in their career, as both mentor and mentee. We want young nurses to realize they are not alone and that by working together, supporting each other, and by creating connections with others, that unique and effective support systems can be built. We also hope to encourage the more seasoned nurses to advocate for the younger generations and for these seasoned nurses to become effective mentors themselves. 

GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
Global Citizenship is an evolving concept. Currently, there is no set definition. One that we like is from IDEAS for global citizenship, ' Global citizenship nurtures personal respect and respect for others, wherever they live. It encourages individuals to think deeply and critically about what is equitable and just, and what will minimize harm to our planet. It is a way of living that recognizes our world is an increasingly complex web of connections and interdependencies. One in which our choices and actions may have repercussions for people and communities locally, nationally or internationally'.

We do not believe in bandaid solutions. Where possible, we want to engage in truly sustainable and citizen-driven change and medical care.  Our medical volunteer trips are not focused on 'the west knowing best'. We  collaborate and work with our partnering organizations and the  local communities within their framework of care. Health promotion and educational needs are discussed and determined by the partnering organizations.
